Scholarships and fellowships for tech, AI and Web3 students in 2026–27 can help ambitious students access quality education, advanced research opportunities, industry mentorship, and professional networks without carrying the full financial burden themselves.

As artificial intelligence, machine learning, cybersecurity, software engineering, data science, and blockchain technology continue to evolve, funding opportunities are available through universities, technology companies, foundations, governments, and research organisations. The challenge is knowing which programmes are legitimate, which applicants qualify, and when to prepare an application.

Unlike general scholarships, technology-focused funding may support a specific degree, research project, internship, professional development programme, or academic fellowship. Some awards cover full tuition and living expenses, while others provide partial tuition assistance, research grants, equipment, conference funding, or mentorship.

For example, NVIDIA’s Graduate Fellowship offers eligible doctoral researchers up to $60,000 for research connected to accelerated computing and related technical fields. Its 2027–2028 application deadline is October 30, 2026, including recommendation letters.

Scholarship content has a problem that most other topics do not: it expires. Three weeks ago, a student reading about Chevening could still apply. Four days ago, Nigerian graduates could still apply for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship. Today, both have closed for the 2027/28 intake. A guide that lists them as “open” is not just out of date; it is a trap for a reader who plans their year around it.

So this guide is built differently. It is a season playbook for tech, AI and Web3 students and early-career professionals, organized around one date, October 24, 2026. It tells you what has just closed, what is open or opening, who actually controls each application (because that determines your real deadline), how to avoid scholarship scams, and how to plan backward from next year’s windows so you are not reading about a deadline after it has passed.

How this guide was researched

We prioritized official program pages (Chevening’s application timeline, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s pages, the Google PhD Fellowship pages published by universities that nominate for it) and university or government announcements that repeat official dates. For several programs we could only reach third-party scholarship sites, and many of those are low-authority and copy each other, so we mark those facts and tell you to verify them.

Three limits matter. First, deadlines change and this article describes the 2026–27 cycle; next year’s dates are expectations based on this year’s pattern, not announcements. Second, we did not verify several widely discussed programs, including Fulbright, Gates Cambridge, Rhodes and Mastercard Foundation Scholars, so they are absent from the dashboard rather than guessed. Third, we found no verified scholarship specific to Web3; see the tech section for what we can and cannot say.

The season dashboard: open, closed and opening

Status as of October 24, 2026. “Door” means who you apply to;

section 3 explains why that matters.

Program Status Deadline (2026–27 cycle) Door Source quality
Chevening Scholarships 2027/28 (UK master’s) Closed October 6, 2026, 11:00 UTC Direct to Chevening Official timeline
Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships 2027/28 (UK) Closed October 20, 2026, 16:00 BST (CSC system); nominating agencies may set earlier dates Nominating agency plus CSC system; for Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Education CSC-linked university page and Nigerian press report
DAAD EPOS development-related postgraduate courses (Germany) Varies by course. Some closed, some open Examples: October 15, 2026 for one MSc; November 30, 2026 for another; a scholarship database lists “around October” for many Directly to each course University page and aggregators; confirm per course
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters 2027/28 (EU) Opening or open, course by course Mostly October 2026 to January 2027; some earlier or later Directly to each consortium; no central portal Mostly aggregators; confirm in the official catalogue
Google PhD Fellowship Closed for the 2026 cycle University-set deadlines in March and April 2026; Google’s own nomination deadline April 30, 2026 University nominates you; you cannot apply directly Multiple university pages

What the table shows at a glance: two of the five best-known awards closed within the last three weeks, one is a patchwork of course-level deadlines, and the one that is broadly open right now, Erasmus Mundus, is the one with the most individual decisions to make.

Who holds the door? Three ways scholarships are controlled

Who holds the door? Three ways scholarships are controlled
Who holds the door? Three ways scholarships are controlled

The most useful idea in this guide is not a program but a question: who controls your application? The answer decides your real deadline, and misunderstanding it is a classic way to miss out.

Door 1: you apply directly to the funder. Chevening is the clear example. You apply on Chevening’s portal, choose three eligible UK master’s courses, and later obtain an unconditional university offer. Your deadline is the funder’s deadline: October 6, 2026 at 11:00 UTC this cycle. Chevening reminds applicants to check what 11:00 UTC is in their time zone, because the portal closes at that moment.

Door 2: someone else nominates you. The Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship works this way. Applicants must go through an approved nominating agency, and the university announcements we found warn that the nominating agency may set an earlier deadline than the CSC’s own, so you must follow both. For Nigeria, a Nigerian newspaper report says the Federal Ministry of Education invited applications with a deadline of October 20, 2026.

The Google PhD Fellowship is the extreme version: students cannot apply to Google at all; their university selects and nominates a limited number, with internal deadlines weeks before Google’s own.

Door 3: the program or course holds the door. Erasmus Mundus and DAAD EPOS are tied to specific degree programs. There is no central Erasmus Mundus application portal, according to the sources we found; each consortium sets its own deadline and requirements. DAAD EPOS scholarships are attached to selected postgraduate courses, and you apply directly to the course, which sets the deadline. The result is that two EPOS courses can have different deadlines, such as October 15 and November 30, 2026 in the two examples we found.

Why this matters. If you only track the funder’s headline date, you will miss the deadline that actually binds you: your nominating agency’s, your university’s internal date, or your chosen course’s. When you add a scholarship to your plan, write down three things: who accepts the application, who sets the deadline, and who writes or uploads each document.

Scholarships and Fellowships

You just missed a deadline: what to do this week

You just missed a deadline: what to do this week
You just missed a deadline: what to do this week

Missing Chevening or the Commonwealth window is painful, and for many readers it is already a fact. Here is a practical response, in order.

1. Do not panic-apply to things you do not qualify for. Your time is better spent on doors still open.

2. Check what is still open. Erasmus Mundus programs with deadlines through January 2027 and DAAD courses with November dates are the most obvious candidates, subject to your field and eligibility. Search the official catalogue and course pages, not scholarship blogs.

3. Reuse the work. A strong statement of purpose, a clean CV and referee relationships are reusable across applications.

4. Start the next cycle now. Treat this year’s closing dates as a preview: Chevening opened on August 4 and closed on October 6, 2026, and the Commonwealth Master’s window ran from early September to October 20. We cannot confirm next year’s dates, but the pattern suggests preparation should begin by spring 2027.

5. Consider university-specific funding. Many UK and European universities run their own awards with their own deadlines, and Chevening itself says that partner scholarships exist and that some go unfilled every year. We did not verify specific universities’ deadlines, so check each university’s funding page.

6. Avoid anyone who offers a shortcut. After a deadline passes, scammers sell “late access.” See the scam guard.

Program notes: what the verified facts say

This section keeps only facts we could tie to a source, and points to what you must check yourself.

Chevening (UK government; master’s)

The 2027/28 timeline on Chevening’s site: applications opened August 4, 2026 and closed October 6, 2026 at 11:00 UTC; eligibility sifting from October; reading committees from mid-October 2026 to January 2027; shortlist and interviews from mid-February, with interviews in March to April 2027; results from mid-June 2027; a deadline of July 8, 2027 (17:00 BST) to submit at least one unconditional offer; study starting September or October 2027.

Applicants choose three eligible UK courses, and the University of Kent’s page states that the award includes a tuition waiver, a monthly stipend, travel costs, visa costs and a travel grant, and that scholars agree to return home for two years after the scholarship and cannot apply for the Graduate Route visa. That return requirement is a major decision factor, and it appears on Kent’s page rather than a headline, so read the official terms.

Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships (UK; for eligible low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries)

Commonwealth Master's Scholarships (UK; for eligible low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries)
Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships (UK; for eligible low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries)

The CSC describes these as for people who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK, funded by the UK’s FCDO, awarded under six development themes (one of which is science and technology for development), and applied for through a nominating agency plus the CSC’s online system. The CSC says it does not charge to apply through its system. The 2027/28 deadline was October 20, 2026 at 16:00 BST.

A Nigerian newspaper reports the Federal Ministry of Education’s call asked applicants to show how their study would contribute to national development and to upload admission letters from UK institutions listed in the application. We saw a low-authority claim that a separate “Shared Scholarship” window may close around December 2026; we could not verify it, so check the CSC site.

DAAD EPOS (Germany; development-related postgraduate courses)

EPOS scholarships are attached to selected courses. One university page for an MSc in environmental governance listed an October 15, 2026 deadline and a requirement that the applicant’s degree be no more than six years old; another course page told applicants that a DAAD application must reach it by November 30, 2026 for a winter 2027/28 start.

A scholarship database from an Indonesian university notes that DAAD deadlines depend on the program and that many fall around October, with some in March or April. Stipend amounts differed between sources (figures from about €934 to €992 appeared), so we do not quote one. Check DAAD’s own course list for the exact deadline, language requirements and work-experience requirement (several sources say at least two years).

Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EU)

There is no single application. Sources say you apply to each joint master’s program, that most deadlines for the 2027/28 intake fall between October 2026 and January 2027 (many in mid-January), and that you can apply to a maximum of three programs in one cycle. One aggregator reported 37 newly selected joint master’s programs for the 2027 intake, including ones in artificial intelligence and semiconductor technology; treat that as a lead to confirm in the official Erasmus+ catalogue rather than as a fact. Another source says some programs have earlier deadlines, so do not assume January for every program.

Google PhD Fellowship

The fellowship supports PhD students in computer science and related fields, with up to two years of funding and a Google research mentor, and it is limited to students nominated by their university, with each university allowed a small number of nominations. University pages for the 2026 cycle list awards of up to US$85,000 a year for new recipients in the United States and Canada, with internal deadlines in March and April 2026 and Google’s final nomination deadline of April 30, 2026.

A Nigerian outlet reports that stipends in regions such as Africa are lower, ranging from $10,000 to $15,000 a year; verify that figure on Google’s site. If you are a doctoral student, your action item is not to apply to Google but to ask your department how internal nominations work, early in the year.

Tech, AI and Web3: where the funding actually is

Most major scholarships are not tech-specific; they reward a plan. The Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship is awarded under six development themes, and one of them is science and technology for development. Chevening, according to a low-authority summary, does not limit awards to a discipline. That means a software developer, a data scientist or a blockchain engineer competes on how convincingly they connect their field to impact, not on being in a “tech scholarship” lane. The Nigerian ministry’s call, for example, asked applicants to show how their study would contribute to national development.

AI-related programs exist inside the big schemes. Erasmus Mundus’s catalogue of joint master’s degrees reportedly includes newly selected programs in artificial intelligence and semiconductor technology for the 2027 intake, per one aggregator; confirm in the official catalogue. The Google PhD Fellowship, for doctoral students, supports research areas that include machine learning, natural language processing, privacy, safety and security, quantum computing, systems and software engineering, according to a university listing of the program’s topics.

Web3 is different, and we have limited verified data. We did not verify any dedicated Web3 scholarship in our research. What the crypto ecosystem offers is mostly grants, fellowships and bounty programs from foundations and companies, which are project-based and differ from scholarships in important ways: payment may be in tokens, terms may change, and the field attracts impersonators. Your site’s Web3 Fellowship Programs: Opportunities for Developers and Tech Grants and Funding for Startups and Innovators cover this ground; we did not review them, so check each named program on its own official site and apply the scam guard below. Never share a seed phrase or private key with anyone offering a grant or fellowship.

What to do with this. Pick the scheme by your situation (career stage, country, field), then use your statement to show how your technical work solves a real problem for a community or country. A vague “I love AI” application is weaker than “I built X for Y users, and the master’s would let me do Z.”

Compare awards the right way

Compare awards the right way
Compare awards the right way

“Fully funded” is a marketing phrase, not a standard. Before you invest weeks in an application, compare these dimensions. The table below summarizes what the sources we found say; every cell needs confirmation on the official page.

Program What sources say it covers Conditions worth knowing Where to confirm
Chevening Tuition waiver, monthly stipend, travel, visa application cost, travel grant (Kent page) Two-year return-home commitment; scholars cannot apply for the Graduate Route visa (Kent page) chevening.org
Commonwealth Master’s Approved tuition fees, plus other support (the CSC page lists the scheme’s purpose; full allowances not verified) Apply via nominating agency; must fit development themes; for eligible low- and middle-income countries cscuk.fcdo.gov.uk
DAAD EPOS Tuition-free study with a monthly payment; amounts vary by source and level Course-specific deadlines; development focus; reported minimum of two years’ work experience daad.de and the course page
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Participation costs and a monthly contribution (an aggregator says up to €1,400) Study in at least two countries; up to three applications per cycle; programs set their own rules Official Erasmus+ catalogue
Google PhD Fellowship Up to two years; up to US$85,000 a year in the US and Canada; lower in some regions Nomination only; university limits nominations Your university’s graduate school

Questions to ask for any award.

• Does it cover the full cost? Tuition, living costs, flights, visa, insurance, books and any dependants.

• When and how is money paid? Monthly stipends do not solve an upfront deposit.

• What conditions follow you home? Return-home rules, bonding, restrictions on staying or working.

• How competitive is it? We did not verify acceptance rates for these programs, so do not trust numbers you see quoted without a source.

• What happens if you win but cannot start? Deferral rules and visa risk.

CHECK:  Fully Funded vs Partial Scholarships

The scam guard

Scholarship scams thrive in the weeks after deadlines and during application seasons, when people are anxious and short of time. The warning signs are consistent across college financial-aid offices and consumer-protection guidance that relays the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s cautions:

• A fee to apply, or to “release” or “redeem” an award. One source’s rule of thumb: never invest more than a postage stamp to apply for aid. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission states that it does not charge to apply through its online system.

• A guarantee. No one controls the judges’ decisions, and any “guaranteed or your money back” promise is a red flag.

• “You’ve been selected” or “you’re a finalist” for something you never entered.

• A request for a credit card or bank account number “to hold” the scholarship.

• “We’ll do all the work.” Legitimate applications take effort, and no one should complete them for you.

• Pressure and urgency, and missing or unverifiable contact details.

Extra cautions for readers in Nigeria and across Africa. This is our general guidance rather than a finding: apply only through the official website or the government body named by the funder; type the web address yourself instead of following a link in a message; treat WhatsApp or Telegram “agents” who promise slots or guaranteed visas as high risk; and verify any “opening” against the funder’s own page.

The Nigerian ministry’s call, as reported in the press, directs applicants to the official system, not to intermediaries.

If you have been scammed, stop paying, contact your bank, and report it to your national consumer or police authority. In the United States, reports go to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Legitimate paid scholarship-search services may exist, but they cannot guarantee awards, and many of the same lists are free; a U.S. Department of Labor tool, CareerOneStop, offers a free scholarship search covering more than 9,500 awards, according to a news report, though it is U.S.-focused.

A backward-planning calendar for the next 12 months

This calendar is our editorial plan built from this year’s verified windows. Next year’s dates are not announced, so treat them as expectations and confirm each on the funder’s site.

When What to do Why
Now to January 2027 Apply to Erasmus Mundus and DAAD courses that fit you; follow each course’s own deadline. If you are a doctoral student, ask your department how Google PhD Fellowship nominations work These are the open doors this cycle
November to December 2026 Book an English-language test if your target programs require one; request transcripts; line up referees Transcripts, tests and references are the slowest items
February to April 2027 Research UK and other target courses for next cycle; shortlist three to five; collect entry requirements Chevening needs three course choices, and the Nigerian Commonwealth call needed admission letters from UK institutions
March to April 2027 Doctoral students: internal nomination deadlines for the Google PhD Fellowship were in March and April this year University deadlines come weeks before Google’s own
May to July 2027 Draft statements and a project or research plan; get feedback from mentors; finalize referees Good essays need several revision rounds
Late July to early August 2027 Watch for Chevening to open (it opened August 4 this year) and for Commonwealth calls (early September this year) Be ready on day one
September to October 2027 Submit well before the deadline, not on the last day; for nominated awards, meet your nominating agency’s earlier date Portals can fail, and agencies close early
October 2027 onward Apply to the Erasmus Mundus and DAAD courses for the following intake The cycle repeats

Time zones. Chevening closes at 11:00 UTC, and the Commonwealth system at 16:00 BST. Convert to your local time and aim to submit at least 48 hours early.

Your application toolkit

Documents. Passport, degree certificates and transcripts, English test results if required, CV, referee letters, a statement of purpose or motivation letter, a study or research plan, admission letters where required, and proof of work experience for programs such as DAAD EPOS. The Nigerian Commonwealth call required uploading admission letters and creating a PDF copy of the submitted application.

Your statement. A simple structure that works across schemes, in our editorial judgment: where you come from and what problem you saw; what you have already built or done; why this program and this field; what you will do afterward and for whom. See your site’s How to Write a Winning Scholarship Essay and How to Secure a Technology Scholarship Abroad; we did not review their contents.

Referees. Ask early, give them your CV and a summary of the program, and send polite reminders. For awards where references must be uploaded by the deadline, such as the Commonwealth’s, a late reference can sink an otherwise complete application.

Tech evidence. A GitHub profile or portfolio, a short write-up of one project and its impact, and for research awards a clear proposal. Keep links working and code readable.

A simple tracker. Copy this table into a spreadsheet:

Program Who holds the door Their deadline My earlier deadline Documents needed Status
Example: Erasmus Mundus course A Consortium (from the course page) (3 days earlier) Letter, CV, 2 references Drafting

Three example applicant strategies

These are hypothetical illustrations, not case studies, to show how the framework works.
A software developer with three years’ experience wanting an AI master’s. Experience is an asset for schemes that value it, such as DAAD EPOS, where sources report a two-year work-experience requirement.

The plan: apply this cycle to a short list of Erasmus Mundus and DAAD courses with AI or data focus, and prepare for next year’s UK awards by shortlisting courses and lining up referees by spring.

A final-year undergraduate with no work experience. Programs that favor professional experience will be harder. The plan: apply to Erasmus Mundus programs that accept recent graduates, build a project portfolio and internship experience during the year, and check university-specific awards, while treating scholarship applications as a skill that improves with each round.

A machine-learning PhD student. The Google PhD Fellowship is out of your direct control, but you can control your readiness. The plan: ask your graduate office in January how nominations work, prepare a research proposal and referee list by March, and make sure your supervisor knows you want to be nominated.

CHECK: • Coding Bootcamps vs Computer Science Degrees

Frequently asked questions

Can I still apply for Chevening 2027/28?

No. Applications opened on August 4, 2026 and closed on October 6, 2026 at 11:00 UTC, per Chevening’s application timeline. Check chevening.org for the next cycle’s dates.

Is the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship still open?

The 2027/28 deadline was October 20, 2026 at 16:00 BST, and nominating agencies could set earlier dates. For Nigeria, a press report says the Federal Ministry of Education’s call set the same date. It has closed; check the CSC site for any other Commonwealth awards and for next year’s call.

What can I apply for right now?

Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (most deadlines October 2026 to January 2027, set by each program) and DAAD EPOS courses with later deadlines, such as November 30, 2026 in one example we found, are the clearest options. Always confirm on the official course page.

What is a nominating agency?

An organization approved by the funder to put forward candidates, usually a government ministry or university body. It may require its own forms and deadline in addition to the funder’s.

Can I apply directly for a Google PhD Fellowship?

No. Students must be nominated by their university, and universities can nominate only a few. Ask your graduate office how internal selection works.

Do I have to return home after a scholarship?

It depends on the award. The University of Kent’s Chevening page states that scholars agree to return home for two years and cannot apply for the Graduate Route visa. Check the terms of any award before accepting.

How do I know a scholarship is real?

Find the funder’s official website independently, check that the web address and contact details match, confirm that no fee is requested, and be suspicious of guarantees or unsolicited notices. Official bodies such as the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission state that they do not charge to apply.

Are there scholarships specifically for Web3 or blockchain?

We found no verified Web3-specific scholarship. Crypto ecosystem grants and fellowships exist, but they work differently from scholarships and need extra due diligence.

Can I apply to more than one scholarship?

Usually yes, subject to each program’s rules. Erasmus Mundus reportedly allows up to three program applications per cycle, and Chevening requires three course choices within one application.

Should I pay for help with my application?

Be careful. Free help is often available from university advisers, alumni and mentors. Paid services cannot guarantee results, and anyone who promises a guaranteed award should be avoided.

Scholarship planning rewards two habits more than any trick: knowing exactly who holds each door, and working backward from dates you have confirmed on official pages. This season, two of the best-known UK awards closed in the last three weeks, a patchwork of German course deadlines runs through November, and Erasmus Mundus is open course by course into January. If you missed a deadline, the best response is calm preparation: reuse your materials, apply to what is still open, and start next year’s cycle early.

Before you act on anything here, confirm the date on the official site, because deadlines are the most perishable facts in this field. Use the related guides above for deeper looks at individual programs, and treat anyone who asks you to pay for an application as a warning sign.
